COLLEGE STATION, Texas-- The 2002 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships
came to a close Monday with the crowning of the individual champions at the A&M Tennis Center.
Georgia's Matias Boeker, the top seed in the singles draw, won his second consecutive
singles title with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Kentucky's Jesse Witten.

Then, Auburn's tandem of Andrew Colombo and Mark Kovacs upset the second-seeded Stanford
duo of David Martin and Scott Lipsky, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, to claim the doubles crown.

The 10-day event drew 11,132 fans to the Texas A&M Tennis Center.
Southern Cal Wins 16th National Title
COLLEGE STATION, Texas-- The 11th-ranked Southern Cal men's tennis team
completed its cinderella run through the NCAA Championships Tuesday with a 4-1 victory over top-ranked
Georgia before 1,261 fans at the Texas A&M Tennis Center.
USC sent retiring coach Dick Leach out with his fourth national championship and
first since 1994. The Trojans upset sixth-seeded Baylor, third-seeded Illinois, second-seeded Tennessee and
the top-seeded Bulldogs in College Station and finish the season 25-5.
Georgia, meanwhile, was denied its second straight national title and wraps up the year
at 28-4.
The Trojans dominated the doubles point with 8-3 and 8-4 wins at No. 3 and No. 2,
respectively, to take a 1-0 lead.
Southern Cal's Daniel Langre captured the first singles point with a 6-4, 6-4 win at
No. 5.
Georgia's Matias Boeker, the nation's top-ranked player, responded with a 6-1, 7-5 victory
at No. 1 to make the score 2-1.
With the Bulldogs fighting back on all courts, USC's Ruben Torres put his team one
win away from the title with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 6.
Tournament MVP Prakash Amritraj clinched a USC win for the third straight day with a
7-6 (3), 7-5 victory on court three. The freshman also iced the matches against Illinois and Tennessee.
ESPN will televise the team championship on a tape-delay basis on Tuesday, May 28 at
2 p.m. (EDT).
